The fifth incarnation of the BMW 5 Series

The introduction of a new BMW model is always an event - an event eagerly awaited by the motoring media, by the BMW dealer and most of all by potential customers.
In the case of the BMW 5 Series it represents the very heart of the BMW marque and the new model is set to replace what has become, since 1996, the benchmark executive model.
Expectations are high and this fifth all-new 5 Series since 1972 does not fail to deliver.
Like the outgoing model it aims to raise the bar a few notches higher: a bar that is already at world record level.

How can it do this? Well the 5 Series:
° is more spacious and comfortable inside,
° is even safer than before,
° is equipped to a higher standard specification,
° brings 'world first' technology to the executive car market,
° is lighter than its predecessor despite being slightly larger,
° accelerates faster, consumes less fuel and offers reduced CO2 emissions,
and,
° is even more fun to drive.

The power of six in 5:
If just one thing defines the essence of a BMW it is the six-cylinder in-line engine.
So for drivers who demand the heady mix of power, response and economy - the three launch engines will be very reassuring.

With BMW's highly praised bi- VANOS technology, both six-cylinder petrol engines deliver impressive power and refinement.
The 2171 cc 520i SE, boasts a maximum power output of 170 bhp at 6,100 rpm and 210 Nm (155 lb-ft) of torque at 3,500 rpm.
The 3.0-litre petrol launch variant offers 231 bhp at 5,900 rpm and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque at 3,500 rpm.
Acceleration is swift with 0-62 mph figures of 9.0 and 6.9 seconds respectively.

The second-generation 3.0-litre diesel powering the 530d SE delivers a massive 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) torque at 2,000 rpm - the same as the outgoing M5.
With advanced common rail injection, maximum power output is boosted to 218 bhp at 4,000 rpm with a 0-62 mph sprint of 7.1 seconds, 0.7 seconds faster than its predecessor.
However fuel consumption remains a frugal 40.9 mpg.
5_e60_04

The most revealing on-road performance figure is 50-75 mph acceleration - a typical motorway experience.
The 530d SE achieves this in 6.7 seconds in fifth gear and only 5.4 seconds in fourth.
Such flexibility is a real world measure.

Six for five:
All three models deliver power (to their rear wheels, of course) via a six speed manual, or, as an option, a six speed automatic gearbox (of the type pioneered on the BMW 7 Series).

Aluminium for light weight and poised handling:
BMW is at the forefront of lightweight construction technology.
So it comes as no surprise that the new 5 Series features a body combining both steel and aluminium, as well as an all-aluminium chassis and suspension.

The body has supreme torsional stiffness, with special side-on crash reinforcements, and absorbing elements in the front, door and rear panels.
Energy absorbing areas at the rear and in the front and rear bumpers complete the picture of a super safe passenger cell.

The all-aluminium chassis comes with a number of design enhancements including wider front and rear tracks and a longer wheelbase.
The result is improved driving dynamics, better fuel consumption and near perfect 50:50 axle load distribution - the 520i SE actually achieves perfect 50:50.
Significant weight reduction also provides unprecedented suspension and damping comfort.

High performance brakes allied to aluminium swing-callipers maximise agility and safety on the road.
Rack and pinion steering, with a lightweight hydraulic rack ensures a smooth steering response even without the 'world first' Active Steering or optional Servotronic assistance.

Innovation:
BMW has long been an innovator, bringing the very latest technology to its cars to improve safety, performance and comfort.
The new 5 Series does not disappoint, playing host to a range of features designed to enhance the driving experience.

Innovations include Active Steering, a revolutionary system that offers drivers extra steering assistance at low speed.
An electric motor increases or decreases the steering ratio, which varies the degree of driver input at the steering wheel.
At low speed just three quarters of a turn on the steering wheel moves the vehicle's front wheels from centre-to-full lock, obviating the need to cross hands or shuffle the wheel during low-speed parking manoeuvres, or when driving around town.

The second-generation iDrive concept makes its debut on the 5 Series too.
Featuring a controller within easy reach of both driver and passenger, and colour display screen housed in its own dashboard cowl at eye height, iDrive is used to access many of the communication, entertainment, comfort and navigation settings.
The system has been improved, with colour coded options and four 'access zones' instead of the eight from the original.
All functions are accessed through a series of straightforward, slide, turn and push actions with the controller.

Dynamic Drive is a suspension control system that minimises body sway in bends.
Using active anti-roll bars hydraulic pressure is converted into torsional strength, absorbing up to 80 per cent of lateral forces of up to 0.6 g.
The result? Unprecedented passenger comfort even when cornering hard.

Taking the technology of the airliner and applying it to the 5 Series brings Head-up Display, an option arriving in April 2004.
This system assists the driver and aids safety by projecting information onto the windscreen via a series of mirrors.
As well as navigation directions, speed and cruise control display, Head-up Display includes Check Control messages warning of safety-related issues such as 'door open'.

Adaptive Headlights are an important safety innovation to improve road illumination by swivelling the headlamps by up to 15 degrees.
Visibility is improved because the lights shine in the direction the steering is directing the car rather than where the car is pointing.
The result is that drivers are able to 'see' round corners as more of the road, and potential hazards, are lit.

Comfort and safety:
Safety and comfort are not mutually exclusive.
In the new 5 Series, occupants travel in a cabin of outstanding design while bathed in comfort.
But they also know that, should the unthinkable happen, they would be protected by a car equipped with class-leading crash protection.

The new 5 Series offers a total of four different seating options, including Comfort Seat, a fully electric seat with passenger memory, lumbar support for driver and passenger and back width adjustment.
The Comfort Seat also comes with an Active Headrest.
This moves forward in the event of an impact, minimising the effect of whiplash and helping to prevent spinal injury.
550i_e60_badge

Passive safety throughout the 5 Series is coordinated by BMW's Active Safety Electronics ( ASE) system.
This features a central safety module, linked to satellite sensors located around the vehicle.
In the event of an impact ASE deploys the most appropriate airbag (of the six standard bags), but also deactivates the electric fuel pump and alternator and battery, and activates the hazard-warning lights if necessary.

Five star design:
Sporting, refined and powerful are three adjectives more normally used to describe a BMW chassis and power train.
But they are equally applicable to the design of the new 5 Series.

Although all the design cues are clearly BMW, the new model is distinctively different to its predecessor, all other BMW models and, importantly, to its competitors.
This unique design language shows that BMW wants to escape from the 'Russian doll' school of design (small, larger and larger still but from the same mould) and offer distinctive and individual cars.

Striking twin headlamp clusters, light and shadow moving across subtle convex and concave panels and a powerful rear end suggest a modern design classic.
But though modern, the new 5 Series includes many familiar BMW design cues, like the redesigned double kidney grille and the familiar C-pillar Hofmeister kink.
5_e60_06

Inside, the 5 Series is a triumph of ergonomics, clarity and space.
The interior presents an ambience of calm, encouraged by wave effects across dashboard and door panels, as well as a series of complementary interior colours, materials and innovative lighting effects.
All constructed to BMW's legendary build quality.

Driver and front passenger benefit from an innovative control layout including a revised iDrive concept and careful separation of driving and comfort functions.
Rear seat passengers enjoy more room thanks to a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, while boot space is significantly enlarged with easier access thanks to a broader loading aperture.
