BMW’s Model Initiative Continues
New models planned for 2006

Entering the 2006 model year, BMW is continuing its full-scale model initiative with the same unlimited momentum. The Company is introducing new models with high-performance and, at the same time, highly efficient engines in nearly all model series. The range of new models and features extends from new entry-level engines in the 3 and 5 Series – the 318i, 318d, and 520d – all the way to the new V8 power units in the 550i and 650i developing 270 kW/ 367 hp together with muscular torque of no less than 490 Nm or 361 lb-ft.

A further highlight is the long-wheelbase version of the BMW 7 Series now available for the first time in the guise of the 730Ld and boasting a very powerful and economical straight-six diesel. The BMW 745d now has an upgraded engine with even more power and torque (242 kW/330 hp and, respectively, 750Nm/553 lb-ft).
New colours, a wide range of new features and attractive M sports packages offer the customer an even wider range of choice in fulfilling his – or her – individual wishes and requests.

BMW’s innovative xDrive all-wheel-drive system helps to meet growing demand for models with all-wheel drive for superior handling and behaviour on the road. Featured not only in the X3 and X5, xDrive offers a supreme standard of driving dynamics, traction and active safety all in one. This technology is featured both in the all-wheel-drive models of the new 3 Series as well as the BMW 5 Series now also comprising the 530xd.

BMW is widely acknowledged as the benchmark in diesel engine technology. Indeed, BMW’s extremely dynamic diesel engines excel through their high standard of power and performance, exemplary running smoothness, and all-round economy. And now BMW is becoming one of the first manufacturers to offer a maintenance-and additive-free particle filter throughout almost its entire range of diesel models.

To reflect its status as the leader in technology, BMW is also introducing BMW Night Vision and BMW High-Beam Assist, two new driver assistance systems further enhancing active safety to an even higher standard than before. Additional innovations now entering series production include special comfort and safety functions incorporated in BMW’s superior DSC Dynamic Stability Control System.
BMW 1 Series:
The BMW 130i.
Starting in autumn, the new top model in the BMW 1 Series, the 130i, is enlarging BMW’s overall model range. And indeed, the new 3.0-litre straight-six (195 kW/265 hp, 315 Nm/232 lb-ft) offers truly outstanding performance in the compact segment.
The BMW 130i accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds, with top speed limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph. On the road, only the 17-inch rims in V-spoke design, chrome-plated bars in the BMW kidney grille, and the dual exhaust pipes with chrome-plated tail ends show the connoisseur that this is a very special BMW 1 Series.
Beginning this autumn, the BMW 1 Series is also available with the BMW Assist telematics function and the BMW Online mobile internet portal. And last but certainly not least, BMW’s Adaptive Headlights are now also available in the compact range.

130i_e87_5
Starting in September 2005, BMW offers the new M Sports Package in all 1 Series, comprising not only the M sports suspension, but also M double-spoke light-alloy wheels (17 or 18 inches) with different-sized tyres front and rear as well as the Aerodynamics Package in body colour.
Inside the car, features such as sports seats, the M leather steering wheel, M footrest and entry trim strips in BMW M Design as well as special aluminium trim strips ensure a supreme touch of exquisite sportiness and style.

BMW 3 Series:
New engines for the 3 Series Saloon.
The 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel in the BMW 330d develops maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp and equally impressive torque of 500 Nm/369 lb-ft. And despite its dynamic performance, with acceleration to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph, the 330d Saloon requires just 6.5 ltr/100km (equal to 43.5 mpg Imp) in the composite EU cycle.
Developing maximum output of 90 kW/122 hp and peak torque of 280 Nm/206 lb-ft, the new 318d Saloon rounds off BMW’s diesel range at the lower end. Through its four-cylinder power unit, the 318d is most certainly an economical athlete: With fuel consumption of just 5.6 ltr/100 km or 50.4 mpg Imp in the composite EU cycle, the car’s performance is quite remarkable, acceleration to 100 km/h coming in 10.6 seconds, from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear in 9.3 seconds, and with top speed of 206 km/h or 152 mph.
The entry-level four-cylinder in the BMW 318i Saloon is based on BMW’s 2.0-litre straight-four petrol engine. Maximum output of 95 kW/129 hp, together with peak torque of 180 Nm/133 lb-ft, are quite sufficient for acceleration to 100 km/h in 10.0 sec, acceleration from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear in just 10.9 sec, and a top speed of 208 km/h or 130 mph. Fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle, finally, is just 7.3 ltr/100 km, equal to 38.7 mpg Imp.
Like the engines in all BMWs already in the market, the new power units naturally comply in full with the strict EU4 emission standard.

BMW xDrive now also in the 3 Series.
BMW’s six-cylinder 3 Series Saloon and Touring models are now also available with the innovative xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The great advantage of xDrive is that it spreads out drive power in fractions of a second variably and depending on requirements between the two axles, thus giving the 3 Series excellent all-wheel-drive dynamics of the highest standard.

Extra safety when towing a trailer.
In the 3 Series equipped with a trailer towing bracket, the latest generation of BMW’s DSC Dynamic Stability Control complete with Trailer Stability Management offers additional safety on the road. This unique system recognises any threat of the car and trailer swaying and automatically takes appropriate counter-measures. DSC with its stabilising intervention in the brakes does not cut in until discreet intervention by Trailer Stability Management is no longer sufficient to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

BMW 5 Series:
The 540i Saloon.
The new 4.0-litre V8 in the 540i develops maximum output of 225 kW/306 hp and peak torque of 390 Nm/287 lb-ft, accelerating the 540i to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and providing a top speed 250 km/h or 155 mph. Fuel consumption is a moderate 11.0 ltr/100 km or 25.7 mpg Imp (composite EU cycle).

Top-of-the-range 550i with V8 power unit replacing the 545i.
The upgraded V8 power unit in the new 550i develops maximum output of 270 kW or 367 hp, with superb torque of 490 Nm/361 lb-ft at 3,400 rpm. The 550i accelerates to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, completing the interim dash from 80–120 km/h in fourth gear in just 5.2 seconds. Fuel consumption in the EU test cycle, finally, is a modest 11.1 ltr/25.4 mpg Imp, quite unusual for a car of this calibre.
Both eight-cylinder models come as standard with a manual six-speed gearbox. Six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is available as an option on both models, with BMW's six-speed SMG Sequential Manual Gearbox being reserved to the BMW 550i. 530xd Saloon/Touring: First 5 Series diesel with all-wheel drive.
The new 530xd is the first BMW 5 Series diesel with all-wheel drive, BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensuring truly outstanding all-wheel driving dynamics and agility. The 530xd accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 242 km/h or 150 mph. Average fuel consumption in the EU cycle, in turn, is a mere 7.6 ltr/100km or 37.2 mpg Imp.

BMW 6 Series:
BMW 6 Series Coupé and Convertible: Now with a new V8 power unit.
The new BMW 4.8-litre eight-cylinder developing maximum output of 270 kW/367 hp and maximum torque of 490 Nm/361 lb-ft has been carried over from the BMW 750i and is now also featured in the BMW 6 Series Coupé and Convertible. Appropriately named the “BMW 650i”, these two new models replace their previous BMW 645Ci counterparts.

Enhanced performance on even less fuel.
Developing an extra 25 kW/34 hp, the new BMW 650i Coupé accelerates to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, its open-air sister model completing the same exercise in an equally dynamic 5.7 seconds. Top speed of both models is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.
Despite this remarkable performance, the new eight-cylinder Coupé consumes just 11.9 ltr/100 km (23.7 mpg Imp), while the 650i Convertible is almost equally reasonable with average fuel consumption of 12.9 ltr/100 km (21.9 mpg Imp).
Only the two new paintwork colours – Monaco Blue and Barbera Red – as well as new 19-inch wheels with different-sized tyres (245/40 R 19 at the front, 275/35 R 19 at the rear) show the connoisseur that these are BMW’s two new 650i models.

650i_e63_side
The most striking new features inside, in turn, are the new Black colour world, the new design of the iDrive Controller, as well as the Start/Stop button on the instrument panel. Comfort Access, finally, is available as an option.
It almost goes without saying that the two BMW 650i models come with the latest generation of DSC Dynamic Stability Control boasting a whole range of new safety functions.

BMW 7 Series:
Long-wheelbase version powered by a diesel engine for the first time.
Starting in September 2005, the long-wheelbase version of the BMW 7 Series will be available for the first time with a diesel engine, to be precise with BMW’s 3.0-litre straight-six diesel.
Featuring the latest diesel technology, this power unit equipped with a maintenance-free diesel particle filter meets all the requirements of the EU4 emission standard. Developing maximum output of 170 kW/ 231 hp and peak torque of 520 Nm/383 lb-ft, this outstanding engine consumes 3.5 per cent less fuel than its predecessor despite the increase in engine power.
The BMW 730Ld accelerate to 100 km/h in just 7.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 238 km/h or 148 mph. Fuel consumption in the composite EU cycle is a moderate 8.2 ltr/100 km or 34.4 mpg Imp.

Generous equipment for maximum comfort.
Compared with the standard-wheelbase version, the BMW 730Ld comes with additional attractive equipment such as Nasca leather upholstery, electric seat heating front and rear, electrical sunblinds at the rear, self-levelling on the rear axle, as well as ornamental roof trim strips in either chrome or body colour.
A wide range of additional features ensures an even higher standard of comfort for the passengers at the rear: Rear seat air conditioning with a separate climate compressor, electrically adjustable comfort seats, active seat ventilation, a second telephone handset, a cooling box and a display screen at the rear with its own Controller in the rear centre armrest enabling the passengers to watch TV programmes in either analogue or digital mode, or to use the optional DVD player.
The new mobile phone preparation kit comprises not only a Bluetooth interface, but also a firmly installed TCU Telematics Control Unit enabling the customer to use all BMW Assistant and mobile BMW Online internet services independently of his own mobile phone.

BMW 745d: the most powerful diesel luxury saloon.
Entering the 2006 model year, BMW's top-of-the-range 745d diesel now boasts significantly more power and torque. With maximum output of 242 kW/330 hp and peak torque of 750 Nm/553 lb-ft, the BMW 745d remains the diesel luxury saloon with the highest power and torque.
Offering enormous power reserves at all times, this unique diesel accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h or 155 mph (electronically limited). Despite the increase in engine output and torque, fuel consumption remains an astoundingly low 9.5 litres/100 km or 29.7 mpg Imp. New assistance systems: BMW Night Vision and High-Beam Assist.
The new assistance systems enhance safety when driving at night to a new level never experienced before, making life much easier for the driver by enabling him to recognise critical situations earlier than in the past.
Further features being introduced immediately in Germany are the rain sensor and automatic driving light control on the 730d/Ld, 730i/Li, and 740i/Li (standard on all models).

BMW X3
X3 2.0i: New entry-level engine with four cylinders.
Introducing the new X3 2.0i, BMW now offers an additional attractive entry-level model into the BMW X family over and above the X3 2.0d.
The revised and upgraded 2.0-litre four-cylinder develops maximum output of 110 kW/150 bhp, with peak torque of 200 Nm/147 lb-ft at 3 750 rpm.
Equipped with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the X3 2.0i accelerates to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds and has a top speed of 198 km/h or 123 mph. Fuel consumption in the EU cycle is a modest 9.3 ltr/100 km, equal to 30.4 mpg Imp.
This new model comes as standard with all-season 235/55 tyres running on 17-inch light-alloy rims. Apart from the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, DSC, DBC (Dynamic Brake Control) and CBC (Cornering Brake Control) as well as the two-stage Adaptive Brake Display all act together to ensure an enhanced standard of active safety. And last but not least, the X3 2.0i comes as standard with BMW’s Trailer Stability Management as well as Hill Descent Control ( HDC).

x3_mpackage_02
BMW X3 3.0d: More diesel power and enhanced agility.
Maximum output of the 3.0-litre straight-six common rail diesel is up 10 kW/14 bhp to 160 kW/218 hp. Peak torque, in turn, is increasing by an even more significant 90 Nm to no less than 500 Nm or 369 lb-ft.
And as an alternative to the six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard, six-speed automatic transmission is available as an option as of autumn.
The increase in engine power obviously reflects on the road performance of the X3 3.0d, with acceleration to 100 km/h now coming 0.5 seconds faster than before in just 7.4 seconds. Being fitted with all-season tyres, the X3 3.0d is limited in its maximum speed to 210 km/h or 130 mph.
Despite this increase in power and performance, the new and extra-powerful three-litre diesel model consumes 0.5 litres less than before, making do with just 7.9 ltr/100km in the combined EU cycle (equal to 35.8 mpg Imp).
Starting in September, the two X3 3.0d and X3 2.0d diesel versions will be fitted as standard with a diesel particle filter to fulfil the EU4 emission norm.

Innovations
Innovations, new equipment and the diesel particle filter.

BMW is offering two new optional driver assistance systems for optimised motoring at night: High-Beam Assist available in September on the 5, 6 and 7 Series incorporates a camera sensor integrated in the interior mirror support serving to monitor traffic conditions and automatically activating/deactivating the high-beam headlights. Whenever no other vehicles are on the road, the system automatically switches on the high beam if the road itself is not sufficiently illuminated.
BMW Night Vision planned to be available as of fourth quarter 2005 on the 7 Series incorporates a thermal image camera covering a distance of up to 300 metres or almost 1,000 feet in front of the car. The image thus provided on the central monitor presents objects with increasing brightness and clarity wherever the camera registers a higher temperature and, therefore, a higher level of heat. This makes human beings and animals the brightest spots in the picture.

DSC with additional functions coming as standard.
BMW’s DSC Dynamic Stability Control offers a whole range of safety and comfort functions such as Hill Start Assist, Brake Standby, Dry Braking, Fading Compensation, Soft-Stop, and Trailer Stability Management.
Starting in autumn 2006, these additional functions will likewise come as standard on the 5 and 6 Series, as well as the six-cylinder versions of the 1 and 3 Series.

Enhanced presentation by the professional navigation system.
Starting in September 2005, the 3 Series Coupé, 3 Series Convertible, 7 Series Saloon, the Z4, X3, and X5 equipped with the BMW Professional navigation system will feature improved graphics on the navigation map for even greater clarity and easier reading. The BMW 7 Series comes additionally with 3D presentation providing a bird’s view perspective.
All of these models as well as former 3 and 5 Series models built as of
September 2002 may be upgraded to this new standard by the BMW dealer within a few minutes simply by updating the car’s software to provide this enhanced presentation.

BMW diesel particle filter on all new and many pre-owned BMWs.
Starting in autumn 2005, not only the 5 Series and 7 Series models already available with the diesel particle filter, but also the new 3 Series Saloon and Touring, the X3 and the X5 will come as standard with this maintenance-free filter technology. And the diesel particle filter will also be available as an option on the 1 Series. This makes BMW one of the first manufacturers with filter systems available for its entire current model range.
Retrofit kits will furthermore be available as of autumn 2005 for numerous current and former model series delivered at the time without a filter, including most models in the former 3 Series.
